How Can I Secure My Wordpress Installation?

Security is a big issue these days, not only in the real world but also in the online world.

Unfortunately, some people have nothing better to do than hack other peoples websites and blogs.

So, what can you do to avoid becoming a victim of such an attack?

Well, the answer is that you need to lock down your website or blog in order to make the hacker's job as hard as possible.

If they are determined enough they'll find a way in but you can certainly make it harder for them in the hope that they will move onto a softer target.

If you run your site on Wordpress then there are many steps you can take in order to improve your security, here are a few of them -

1. Ensure that you are running the latest version of Wordpress - hackers are always finding new holes and exploits so defend yourself with the latest version of WP which will have all the latest exploits patched up.

2. Maintain strong password security - use complex passwords and change them often as hackers will sometimes attempt to gain entry to your blog via a brute force attack or dictionary attack.

3. Make sure that you have set the correct file and folder permissions- setting file and directory permissions is important as you don't want to give access to unauthorized people. Your Chmod values should be 755 for directories, 644 for plugins and core WP PHP files, and 666 for your active theme files.

4. Backup on a regular basis - the more often the better because, if something does come up, you'll be able to restore your blog within minutes.

I personally backup my blog every day.
